The Yogi Adityanath-led government in Uttar Pradesh has approved ₹10,000 crore worth of solar projects

The Yogi Adityanath-led government in Uttar Pradesh has approved an ambitious ₹10,000 crore investment in solar energy projects. This is part of the state's ambitious plan to achieve a renewable energy capacity of 22,000 MW.

The initiative aims to reduce dependence on conventional energy sources and lower carbon emissions, aligning with India’s national clean energy goals.

Three Major Solar Projects in Bundelkhand Region

As part of the roadmap, three solar power projects with a total capacity of 2,000 MW will be developed in the Bundelkhand region, covering the districts of Jhansi, Lalitpur, and Chitrakoot. These regions have been identified for their potential to host large-scale renewable energy projects. The solar farms will not only boost the state’s renewable energy generation but also contribute significantly to local development.

Project Development and Key Players

The Uttar Pradesh New and Renewable Energy Development Agency (UPNEDA) has selected two major companies to carry out the development of these projects.

  • NTPC Green Energy will develop two solar power plants:
    • 800 MW capacity in Chitrakoot
    • 600 MW capacity in Lalitpur
  • Hinduja Group has been chosen to develop a 600 MW solar plant in Jhansi.

These projects are expected to be operational by December 2025, playing a crucial role in Uttar Pradesh’s renewable energy expansion and contributing to its overall energy security.

Job Creation and Economic Growth

The solar projects are expected to generate thousands of jobs in construction, operation, and maintenance. The growing renewable energy sector will also attract further investments, fueling economic development in the region. This will create a ripple effect, benefiting local businesses and communities through increased energy access and employment opportunities.

The government’s focus on renewable energy aims to stimulate both local and national economic growth, while also contributing to a greener future for Uttar Pradesh and India as a whole.

Uttar Pradesh's Green Energy Goals:

  • The state expects to save ₹1 trillion by replacing conventional energy sources with solar power.
  • 41,000 solar projects are integrated into the Jal Jeevan Mission, ensuring enhanced energy access and reduced costs.
  • Uttar Pradesh has set a target to produce 1 million tonnes of green hydrogen/green ammonia annually by 2029.

Future Solar Projects and Expansion Plans

The Uttar Pradesh government is not stopping here. UPNEDA has also floated bidding documents for an additional 1,200 MW solar power plant in Jalaun, Bundelkhand. This project will further add to the state’s solar power capacity, bringing the region closer to achieving its renewable energy targets. Similar projects are also in the pipeline for other areas, including Mirzapur, Kanpur, and Prayagraj.

These efforts align with Uttar Pradesh’s larger renewable energy ambitions, which also include the expansion of compressed biogas, biocoal, and biodiesel production over the next few years.

Conclusion: A Greener Future for Uttar Pradesh

In conclusion, the ₹10,000 crore investment in solar energy projects is a milestone for Uttar Pradesh, setting the state on the path to becoming a renewable energy hub in India.

The projects will enhance energy security, create economic opportunities, and support India’s climate goals and offer a cleaner, greener future for both the state and the country.
