MNRE Launches ₹2.3 Crore Start-up Challenge for Rooftop Solar and Renewable Tech

Key Highlights

  • The Indian government wants to support innovative ideas in the field of rooftop solar energy and distributed renewable energy (RE) — like solar panels for homes, small businesses, villages, etc.
  • To do this, they have launched a challenge (competition) where startups can submit their ideas or technologies related to solar rooftops or small-scale renewable energy.
  • The total reward/funding for this challenge is ₹2.3 crore (₹23 million). Startups that win will get financial support to help develop or scale up their solutions.
  • The goal is to boost clean energy innovation, make solar and renewable power more accessible and affordable, and support India’s green energy goals.

About the Start-Up Challenge

The Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE), Government of India, has launched a nationwide Start-up Challenge focused on boosting innovation in rooftop solar and distributed renewable energy (RE) technologies. With a total funding pool of ₹2.3 crore, the initiative is aimed at empowering Indian start-ups to create scalable, cost-effective solutions for clean energy deployment.

The challenge will be implemented with support from the National Institute of Solar Energy (NISE) and in collaboration with Startup India, a flagship initiative under the Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade (DPIIT).

Benefits and Rewards

Selected start-ups will compete for a total grant of ₹2.3 crore, which includes:

  • ₹1 crore for the 1st Prize

  • ₹50 lakh for the 2nd Prize

  • ₹30 lakh for the 3rd Prize

  • 10 Consolation Awards of ₹5 lakh each

Winners will also receive incubation support, mentorship from industry experts, and opportunities for pilot projects, backed by MNRE and NISE.

By supporting emerging technologies and business models, the government aims to accelerate the adoption of rooftop solar, improve energy access in underserved areas, and contribute to India's renewable energy targets.
