Are you considering installing solar panels at home to harness renewable energy and save on electricity bills? In this guide, we will take you through a detailed step-by-step process of installing solar panels at home, from planning to powering up your solar system.

Things to Consider Before Solar Panel Installation:

1. Analyze Your Electricity Bill:

Before diving into solar panel installation, it's crucial to understand your current energy consumption. Review your electricity bills to get an idea of your monthly usage in kilowatt-hours (kWh). This information will serve as the basis for determining the size of the solar energy system you'll need.

2. Determine Solar System Size:

Once you have an estimate of your energy consumption, calculate the size of the solar system required. Consider the wattage of all the electrical appliances you plan to use and the number of hours they'll be in operation daily.

3. Make Equipment Checklist:

Make a checklist of the equipment needed for a solar energy system. This typically includes solar pv modules, a charge controller, wires (AC & DC), Solar mounting structure, an inverter, Lightning Arrester, Earthing Cables, MC4 connectors and a battery (if opting for an off-grid system).

4. Prepare Your Space:

Before installation, ensure that the area where you plan to install the solar panels receives ample sunlight throughout the day. Trim any overhanging branches or remove any obstructions that may cast shadows on the panels.

5. Choose Solar Panel Supplier:

Select a reputable Solar Panel Manufacturing Company to supply and install your solar panels. Consider factors such as the variety of solar panel models available, cost, warranty options, and customization for your specific needs.

6. Conduct a Technical and Feasibility Study:

Before installation, assess your building's structure and rooftop area, energy consumption profile. Consider factors like appliances in use, number of occupants, and solar radiation at your location.

7. Budget Planning:

Estimate the cost of installing solar panels based on your energy consumption and equipment requirements. Consider additional costs such as inverter capacity, earthing, battery storage (if applicable), warranties, maintenance, and the number of panels needed to meet your energy goals.

8. Grid Connection:

Determine whether you want to integrate your solar system with the electrical grid (on-grid system) or operate independently (off-grid system). This decision will influence the type of inverter and battery storage you'll need.

9. Obtain Permits and Grants:

Once you've finalized your installation plan, obtain the necessary permits to legalize the installation. Additionally, explore potential subsidies or incentives for solar panel installation available in your area.

Solar Panel Step-by-Step Installation Process:

A Simple Guide to Installing Solar Panels at Home - This guide simplifies the solar panel installation process, breaking down each step into easy-to-follow instructions. Let's learn how to install solar panels step by step.

1. Installing the solar mounting structure

The first step in solar panel installation is fixing the mounting structure to support the panels. The whole mounting structure must be tilted and have an angle between 15 to 20 degrees to have maximum sunlight exposure. For countries in the Northern Hemisphere, the best direction to face solar panels is south because it gets maximum sunlight. So install the structure accordingly.

  • For Sloped Roofs - a railed system is commonly used. This consists of attaching a set of rails to the roof to hold the solar modules. Flashings, screws and bolts are used to attach these rails by drilling the roof and using sealant to prevent water leakage.
  • For Flat Roofs - Installers use either ballasts or concrete blocks to rack the solar panels.

Once you secure the structures into place properly, you can move on to installing the racking rails. When installation day begins, start with ensuring the solar racking system conforms to your design and drawing.

2. Mounting the Solar Panels

Once your mounting structure is installed, now you have to fix solar panels with the structure. For this you need to place the panels in such a way that the mounting holes are perfectly lined up with the rails. Solar Modules must be mounted on mounting holes located at the rear side with the stainless steel nut, bolt and washer. Each Module must be securely fixed to the mounting structure at a minimum of four points.

We recommend leaving a space of at least 10 mm between two modules considering linear thermal expansion of the module frames. You need to place the next panel on the rails in order to ensure that the clamps are wedged between the two consecutive panels. It is recommended to use stainless steel fixing only. Always select the length of mounting screw after considering a clearance of 5-10 mm between the module back face & screw face to avoid any breakage of module while tightening. Following this you need to tighten the clamps between the panels.

3. Wiring and interconnection of solar panels

All wiring should be done in accordance with applicable electrical codes. In this step you will connect the solar panels using MC4 connectors and junction boxes. Depending on your system design, you can connect panels in series or parallel to achieve the desired voltage and current output.

  • Series Connection: In this case, the Positive (+) Wire of one PV module is connected to the Negative (–) Wire of another module. This type of wiring increases the voltage matching with the battery bank. Whereas current remains constant.
  • Parallel Connection: In this case, Positive (+) to Positive (+) and Negative (–) to Negative (–) connection is done. This type of wiring voltage of each panel remains the same and current increases.

Make sure that the maximum output voltage of the string will not exceed the inverter input voltage, taking into account temperature variations.

Match the polarities of cables and terminals when making the connections; failure to do so may result in damage to the module.

Make sure that the panels are not connected to the load during the installation phase. For safety purposes, the grid must be disconnected to ensure no electricity will flow during the installation.

4. Connecting the solar panels array to solar inverter:

After wiring the panels, the positive wire from the solar panel is connected to the positive terminal of the inverter and the negative wire is connected to the negative terminal of the inverter. Ensure the positive and negative terminals are matched correctly to avoid short circuits.

5. Connecting the solar inverter to battery (for Off-grid Systems):

If you are planning for an off-grid solar power system to store electric energy so that you can use that power during night or dark cloudy sky then you need to connect your solar power system with a battery. So connect the solar inverter to the solar battery. The positive terminal of the battery is connected with the positive terminal of the inverter and negative to negative.

6. Connecting the solar inverter to the power grid (for On-grid Systems):

If you're integrating your solar system with the electrical grid, connect the inverter to the main power switchboard. This allows excess energy generated by the solar panels to be fed back into the grid.

7. Turning on the Inverter:

Once all connections are made, switch on the solar inverter. Monitor the digital display to ensure proper functioning and to view real-time statistics of energy generation and usage.

8. Earthing:

Proper earthing is essential for safety in solar panel installations. Ensure adequate earthing for modules, inverters, and the grid connection. Copper strip earthing is recommended for better conductivity and durability.

Congratulations! You've completed the installation of your solar panel system. By harnessing the power of the sun, you're not only reducing your carbon footprint but also enjoying the benefits of renewable energy. With proper maintenance and care, your solar panels will continue to provide clean and sustainable power for years to come.
